Silas Purnell Scholarship
Eligibility: Two awards; One each to MO-KAN-NE and Ohio (Chapter recipient rotates annually)
Amount: $1,000 award to each Chapter
Description: The Silas Purnell Scholarship was established by the EOA Foundation Board of Directors in 2000. Initial support was provided by two EOA Foundation board members and the IL Chapter. The scholarship has been awarded since 2002 and is fully endowed to provide at least one scholarship annually.
Silas Purnell worked for Talent Search at the Ada S. McKinley Community Center in Chicago, Illinois. He served students for 34 years and was known nationally as an advocate for equal access for low-income and first-generation students. He was directly responsible for thousands of students gaining access to, and succeeding in, higher education. Mr. Purnell developed a national alumni network of students who participated in his Talent Search program who have gone on to accomplish great things in higher education and in the private sector.
Silas Purnell Scholarships are awarded annually and selection criteria include participation in an EOP or TRIO program in the relevant chapter during the year of selection, enrollment in or anticipated enrollment in an accredited two or four-year post-secondary institution, financial need, cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above, and demonstrated significant involvement in co-curricular and/or community activities. The nominator must be a EOA member.
